The Value of Additional Cervicothoracic Spine Sagittal T2-weighted Images Included in Routine Lumbar Spine MR Imaging

چکیده
MRI is commonly used to evaluate lumbar spine abnormalities in patients with symptoms such as lower back pain, leg pain, paresthesia, weakness in the legs, and claudication. Occasionally, these symptoms are caused by pathologic lesions in the cervical or thoracic spine and mistaken for those caused by lumbar spine lesions. Some pathologic lesions in the cervical or thoracic spine may be serious and need early diagnosis for prompt treatment. In our hospital, additional cervicothoracic spine sagittal T2-weighted images (CT SAG T2WIs) have been obtained routinely in lumbar spine MRI for eight years. CT SAG T2WIs are easily obtained in short time, about 1 minute 40 seconds, without positional change or additional survey acquisition. According to our experience, CT SAG T2WI is useful for screening a pathologic lesion in the cervical or thoracic spine. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no study about the usefulness of CT SAG T2WIs in routine lumbar spine MRI. The aim of this study was to evaluate usefulness of CT SAG T2WIs included in routine lumbar spine MR

Incorporation of Whole Spine Screening in Magnetic Resonance Imaging Protocols for Low Back Pain: A Valuable Addition
Study Design A retrospective review of lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies conducted at the Department of Radiodiagnosis & Imaging of a Tertiary Care Armed Forces Hospital between May 2014 and May 2016. Purpose To assess the advantages of incorporating sagittal screening of the whole spine in protocols for conventional lumbar spine MRI for patients presenting with low back pain. ...

BACKGROUND The study was undertaken to determine whether a single slice magnetic resonance (MR) myelogram sequence improves the interpretation and diagnostic yield for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spine. METHODS A total of 100 cases with positive findings were retrospectively reviewed. All patients had initial imaging with sagittal T1-weighted (T1-W) and T2-weighted (T2-W) scans, f...
متن کاملMagnetic resonance (MR) imaging of lumbar spine: use of a shortened protocol for initial investigation of degenerative disease.
PURPOSE To assess the potential use of shortened protocol MRI of lumbar spine in the investigation of degenerative disc disease in Northern Ireland. MATERIALS & METHODS Prospective study of 35 patients having MR imaging of lumbar spine performed during a 12-month period by one consultant radiologist. T1-weighted and T2-weighted sagittal images of lumbar spine were obtained in all cases, as we...
متن کاملEpidural fibrosis and recurrent disk herniation in the lumbar spine: MR imaging assessment.
Twenty patients were enrolled in a prospective study to evaluate MR imaging in the differentiation of epidural scar and herniated disk material. Fourteen patients had surgical verification of imaging findings. In 12 (86%) of these patients, the MR interpretations fully agreed with the observations at surgery. Careful integration of the findings on sagittal and axial T1-weighted images with more...
متن کاملUsing magnetic resonance imaging to identify the lumbosacral segment in children.
Identification of the lumbosacral (L-S) segment on magnetic resonance (MR) images is important for appropriate treatment of disease in the lumbosacral (L-S) area. In the study, data obtained from plain A-P radiographs of the L-S spine and sagittal MR imaging scans (sagittal T1- and T2-weighted sequences) of the L-S spine and sacrum with the coccygeal bone, are analyzed. Twenty-six children aged...
